6 Steps to Cleaning Your Showerhead

Step 1: Scrub Down the Showerhead

Take your brio scrubber and give your showerhead a good old scrub with some warm water. Your aim is to breakdown any of the initial excess dirt, limescale or minerals residing on the showerhead.

Step 2: Mix a White Vinegar and Warm Water Solution

Mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water (not too hot) in a measuring jug. You then want to carefully transfer the solution into a small plastic sandwich bag.

Step 3: Tie the Plastic Bag Around the Showerhead

You then want to immerse the showerhead in the plastic bag solution and tie off the bag with the elastic bands. This can be a little tricky on bigger showerheads, but with some nifty handwork, you should get it.

Step 4: Allow the Showerhead to Soak

You should leave the showerhead to soak for about an hour. The vinegar and water solution will start to breakdown the mineral deposits and any limescale

Step 5: Run the Showerhead

After an hour, you can remove the showerhead, give it a good wipe with the brio scrubber and flush it with hot water. This will help flush out any of the excess mineral deposits residing inside the showerhead.

Step 6: Check the Flow

Now that you’ve descaled your showerhead, assess your water flow for increased pressure. If you’re still struggling with low water pressure, then read our dedicated increase shower pressure guide for further tips.

How to Keep Your Showerhead Clean

Pulling out the white vinegar and water solution every 6 months can start to become a bit of a pain. To stop minerals and limescale backing up, follow these simple steps.

1. Wipe Down Your Showerhead After Every Shower

When you’ve finished drying, take your towel and give the showerhead a quick wipe. It only takes a few seconds and this will prevent limescale build-up.

2. Scrub the Showerhead Once Per Month

Bathrooms should be cleaned at least once per month. However, a lot of people don’t clean their bathroom every month. If you’re one of those people, just give your showerhead a once over with a brio scrubber every month. This will take off any excess minerals starting to cause blockages further back in the showerhead.

3. Purchase a Limescale Resistant Showerhead

If you live in an area of the UK with particularly hard water, then we recommend purchasing a limescale resistant showerhead. These showerheads come fitted with removable filters that stop excess chemicals and minerals reaching your showerhead. Ideal for fighting limescale, preventing eczema and removing 99% of the chlorine found in water.
